Job Type: Part-Time
Pay: $20 - $25/hour - based on experience Schedule: Sundays, 8:00am to 11:00am, with administrative duties as required. 

This job reports directly to the Church Rector.

St. James Episcopal Church is seeking a Nursery Director!

Come and lead the relaunch of our nursery - After being closed for over 2 years during the COVID pandemic, we are happy to once again be offering care and spiritual enrichment to the youngest members of our parish.


We are looking for a caregiver that has experience working with children ages 1-6. The ideal candidate will provide nursery leadership in a safe, fun, developmentally appropriate enrichment in the church nursery. Candidates do NOT need to be Episcopalian, but do need to be comfortable working in a church setting. The successful candidate will undergo a mandatory background check and complete Safe Church Training upon being hired.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for providing safe, enriching childcare to children aged 1- 6 Maintaining a clean and safe space for children to play.

  • Candidate must commit to being on time every Sunday to open and operate the nursery from 8:00am to 11:00am, including holidays and other special church services related to major Christian holidays like Christmas and Easter. Approved absences for nursery employees require a two-week notice. nursery employees must provide a minimum of 2 hours’ notice for unplanned absences.

  • The Nursery Director is responsible for scheduling employees and volunteers for hours the nursery is open, maintaining two trained individuals with children at all times. The Nursery Director will work with their St. James liaison to recruit volunteers to support the nursery.

  • The Nursery Director is responsible for making sure anyone working with children in the nursery is trained and will work with and provide support and instruction to other nursery employees or volunteers.

  • Typical child care duties: feeding, diapering, leading activities or games, crafts, and play-based, spiritually enriching engagement.

  • The Nursery Director must maintain accurate accounting of all children in the nursery and stay in the nursery until all children are secured with a responsible adult named on the child’s registration form.

  • The Nursery Director must adhere to the Utah Episcopal Diocesan Policy on Protection of Children and Youth from Abuse and sign a code of conduct.

  • Create open, closing and cleaning checklists and ensure all open, closing and cleaning checklists are completed weekly reporting any needs for the Nursery to the office.


Core Competencies:

  • Experience in caring for children between 1-6 years with the ability to adapt and interact with a variety of personalities.

  • Dependability is key to this role. Tardiness/excessive absences will result in termination of employment.


License/Certification:

CDA credentials or other certifications preferred, not required
CPR/First Aid Certification required. If not current, training will be provided.
